Grave Of The Fireflies (1988)
I watched Grave Of The Fireflies (1988) last night.
Another 10/10 movie that ruined my life. Oh my God. I rarely cry at movies, but this one got me. Spoilers ahead!
It's an incredible movie, one of the best I've seen, in all honesty. As someone who is very fixated on war history at the moment, I figured it would be good to watch. Oh how wrong I was.
I love the animation of course, and the plotline. The characters are lovable and they're the kind you really want to see succeed, especially Setsuko since she's so young. Seita is also a great character and an incredible representation of how many children felt during WWII.
I didn't cry at the movie until the end. My dad told me that it was a very sad movie and that it would be torture to watch it, and, until the end, I didn't believe him. When Seita burned Setsuko's body, I pretty much burst into tears.
One thing that really gets me is that, even though the story is fictional and it's animated, it's still realistic. This happened. This is happening right now in the Middle East. This is the reality of countless families and it will be the reality of countless more, and that's absolutely terrifying.
WWIII will most likely happen within my lifetime (for context, I'm 15), and that's an awful thought. Maybe I'm being dramatic, but I don't know anymore. Tensions between nations are high, NATO could collapse at any moment, and we've only reached the tip of the iceberg of what the U.S. government has been hiding for decades.
I don't know what to do about it other than speak up. Even speaking up is dangerous. Thinking about it is dangerous. The government and billionaires might as well be the thought police from George Orwell's 1984.
"If you comply, you will not die." That is a real quote from a real government representative. Think about it for a moment. Don't read that and just go, "Damn that's crazy." It's far deeper than that. This is happening and it will get worse.
